Call to Action! Email Your State Legislators to Oppose ‘Meet and Confer’

Source: GSACC

Chamber President Richard Perez is encouraging all Chamber members to immediately contact state legislators to oppose Senate Bill 2446 and House Bill 3686 on the House side, commonly referred to as “meet and confer.” Perez, Chamber Chairman Jim Goudge and Chamber Chair Elect Carri Baker Wells will be joined by Chamber Board members in Austin this Wednesday to testify, when it is expected to be presented to the Senate Intergovernmental Relations Committee.

It is critical that our members contact our legislators immediately because of the timing of this discussion.

Chamber members have said that this legislation is potentially damaging to local businesses of all sizes if it passes.

The Chamber’s Public Affairs Steering Committee has developed a position statement in opposition of “meet and confer” and will present it to our Executive Committee on April 16 and at the Board on April 23.

“’Meet and confer’ begins putting our city on a slippery slope of unionizing non police and fire city employees,” said Perez.  “At a time when the country is in its worst economic crisis since the Great Depression and when the City of San Antonio is beginning to experience budgetary shortfalls, it does not make sense to potentially force the City into long-term financial and binding contractual agreements for non-peace officer civilian employees as well,” he added.

Please download the attached "white paper" that provides you with detailed background on “meet and confer.”

The Chamber has also put a letter online that can be used as a template to send to your legislators. We encourage you to take a few minutes today to email and write a letter of opposition to our legislators. Their addresses are listed below. You can also download a spreadsheet with all of the legislators and the members of the House Urban Affairs and the Senate Intergovernmental Relations Committees, which have been assigned these bills.

If you have any questions about this process, please contact our Public Affairs Department at 210-229-2161.

Simple steps to follow:

1. Download the sample letter and update it with your information to reflect your company/name.  Download here.

2. Next, download a spreadsheet that has addresses and email that you can use to merge your letter or email.  Download here.

If you would like to make a call, or visit their offices, the San Antonio delegation is listed below.
