San Antonio celebrates National Day of Action
Southwest Workers Union (SWU) is joining hundreds of organizations around the world in a march Saturday. Coinciding with the World Economic Forum in Davos Switzerland, people’s movements around the world are organizing the Global Day of Action to present an alternative vision to the policies of neoliberalism put forth at Davos that continues to deepen the gap between rich and poor. March organizers call for an end to the war on migrant workers in the U.S., an end to the failed free trade agreements that create poverty, an end to the war in Iraq, and aggressive policies to curb climate change.
The day of action is happening in place of the World Social Forum (WSF) where tens of thousands of global justice activists have convened every year since 2001 under the banner "Another World Is Possible!" SWU participated in the National Planning Committee of the first ever U.S. Social Forum, which brought together 15,000 people in Atlanta last summer. A delegation of 50 travelled from San Antonio to the forum on the People’s Freedom Caravan, connecting with the struggles of impoverished communities in New Orleans, Jackson, Houston and other cities along the way.
