Mariachi Vocalist Vie for ‘Best’ in the US. In Stiffest Competition

Students from throughout Texas will compete in the largest and most competitive mariachi vocal competition of its kind in the country and the ONLY one judged by members of the world renowned Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán.

Thirty-four mariachi vocal finalists will compete as part of the 14th Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza. Students compete in 1 of 3 categories: elementary/middle School, high school and college/university.

First, second and third place winners are selected from each category and one student is named Best in the U.S. mariachi vocalist. The Best in the U.S. vocalist wins the honor of opening for the Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán concert in San Antonio on Saturday, December 6.

 

 

The Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza is a 7-day mariachi music festival held November 30 through December 6.

The festival attracts 20,000 people who participate in more than a dozen mariachi-related events that celebrate the Hispanic culture while promoting higher education among Hispanic youth.

Highlighting the 7-day music festival is a concert featuring the world-renowned and Mexico City based Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán who performs at the San Antonio Municipal Auditorium on Saturday, December 6 at 7:30 p.m. with the University of Texas at San Antonio orchestra.
