Aug 30 (Sat) — Know Why You Are Marching Civil Rights and Film Series

Noon at M.L. King Academy, 3501 M.L. King Drive 

Joyce Ann Brown, who uses her nearly 10-years spent in prison for a crime she did not commit as a platform to help the falsely accused, will be keynote speaker. Her 1990 book “Justice Denied” details her experience. She currently is president and chief executive officer for the Dallas-based MASS – Mothers (Fathers) for the Advancement of Social Systems Inc., which she founded. Event sponsors include SAISD, the host school, Calvert International Consulting, Neighborhoods First Alliance, Frost Bank, Wellcare, FOX 29, MY 35, and Univision Radio.

Sept. 5 (Fri) — Ribbon-cutting ceremony 

9:30 a.m.  at Travis Early College High School, 1915 N. Main Ave.

SAISD and SAC – San Antonio College officials will join students and staff in celebrating the official debut of this opportunity for teens wanting a fast track to higher education. Offered in partnership with SAC, the District’s newest high school opens to freshmen with other grades added each following year. Upon graduation students will be able to earn an associate’s degree and/or up to 60 hours, or two years of college credit, toward a bachelor’s degree at no cost.

 

Sept. 6 (Sat) — ‘Reach Out to Dropouts’ 

8 a.m.  at all SAISD high schools

Volunteers will join District and city of San Antonio staff when they take their “come back to school” message to the streets by knocking on the doors of students who have not shown up since the Aug. 25 first day of classes. Hardships that teens cite for dropping out will be addressed, and high schools will be open until 2:30 p.m. to enroll those wanting to return. 

 

Sept. 6 (Sat) — SAISD Fall Bilingual Symposium

7:15 a.m. to 12:35 p.m. at Burbank High School, 1002 Edwards

Keynote speaker will be Dr. Criselda Alvarado, co-author of the Woodcock- Muñoz Language Survey. Each year these symposiums are held for Bilingual/English as a Second Language educators, and for secondary core content teachers who teach-English-language learners.
