Parks and Recreation Director Appointed
Xavier Urrutia has been appointed as the new Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of San Antonio by City Manager Sheryl Sculley. Urrutia’s position became effective, January 20, 2009.
As the Director of Parks and Recreation, Urrutia will be responsible for providing high level oversight and direction for San Antonio’s celebrated parks, outdoor spaces, and recreation programs. The position assumes full management responsibility for park maintenance and safety, along with development and implementation of projects and plans for current and future parks, and implementation actions related to environmental protection and open space opportunities
“The programs and services provided by Parks and Recreation are a vital part of the City of San Antonio,” said Sculley. “I am confident that Xavier’s experience and leadership will continue to guide the department as it strives to provide quality services to our community.”
Urrutia has served as an employee with the City for more than ten years. Prior to his appointment, Urrutia served as the City’s Interim Director of Parks and Recreation for six months. He also served as an Assistant Solid Waste Management Director in 2007 and as the Interim Assistant Director for the department in 2006. Urrutia also previously served as an Acting Assistant Director and Fiscal Planning Manager for the Department of Community Initiatives.

Urrutia holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.
