SA Is Ready to Rock ‘N’ Roll Marathon

SAN ANTONIO, TX.—  Elite Racing, Inc., organizer of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon series announced today that the City of San Antonio will be the new home of the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio Marathon & Vi Marathon. The inaugural race is set to run through San Antonio on Sunday, November 16, 2008 and will replace the city’s existing marathon. Organizers expect to draw more than 20,000 runners and walkers to the event, which will feature 70 live bands along the marathon and half-marathon courses.

Online registration is open at www.RnRsa.com, featuring a special early-bird rate of $65 for the marathon and $55 for the half-marathon available through Nov. 16, 2007.

The Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio Marathon & 1/2 Marathon is now part of a national series of seven musically themed marathons and half-marathons produced annually by Elite Racing. The 26.2 and 13.1-mile courses will run past many of the city’s historic sites and parks, while featuring live bands and cheerleaders positioned at each mile. Organizers plan to unveil the new courses in early 2008.

"We are thrilled to have this world-class sporting event become a highlight on San Antonio’s list of outstanding annual attractions," said Dr. Susan Blackwood, executive director of the San Antonio Sports Foundation. "Our city is known for its four-time NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs, and now it will be recognized as a great venue for running."

The Alamodome, a frequent host of NCAA Championship tournaments including the 2008 NCAA Men’s Final Four, will also be the home for many of the events surrounding the race. Race weekend begins with a two-day Health & Fitness Expo where all participants go to pick up their race number. The expo will feature more than one hundred running and fitness retailers, exhibits and clinics.

After crossing the finish line outside the Alamodome, runners will go inside that evening for the post-race concert – a celebration recognizing the participants’ accomplishments. What is a Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon?
Musical Marathons Produce Good Vibrations
It took the loneliness of a long distance runner, "running on empty," to see the vision of a nation dancing in the streets.

Tim Murphy, a former hospital supplies salesman, had a vision on a lonely stretch of road in the final miles of a grueling marathon over 25 years ago. His vision was to place a live band at each mile along a marathon course as a source of entertainment for marathoners. Now, 10 years after the first Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon in San Diego, Calif., Murphy’s idea has grown into a national series of six musical marathons and half-marathons nationwide.
After building his reputation with a series of successful shorter distance races in the area, Murphy staged his first marathon in his adopted city of San Diego in 1998. What made this marathon different than all others was the on-course experience. To increase the fun along the route for runners and walkers, Murphy positioned rock bands at entertainment stages along every mile of the course, added hundreds of local cheerleaders and then topped the experience off with a major headliner concert that same evening as a reward for all the participants.

The idea of the marathon as more than just a competition for racing purists was an instant success, and has created a groundswell of national support from runners and walkers alike. Today, Elite Racing has become the leading producer of musical marathons and half marathons in the country, attracting more than 130,000 runners and walkers annually to the cities of San Diego, Phoenix, Nashville, Virginia Beach, Philadelphia and San Jose, Calif.

The concept of adding music to marathons has encouraged people to have fun along the route while challenging themselves to improve their overall fitness has been embraced by events around the globe. As a result, Murphy has spearheaded a revolution in staging running events that provide a healthy, fun outlet for people from all walks of life, while producing events that have become a highlight on annual marathon calendars.

A Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon weekend is celebration complete post-race concert and a two-day free Health & Fitness Expo and a post-race concert featuring a headlining act.
