Smart Commuting to Reduce Air Pollution

San Antonio,  – City of San Antonio Mayor Phil Hardberger and Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff are challenging businesses and other organizations to remove more than one ton of air pollution this June with the 2009 Walk & Roll Corporate Challenge.  Organizations in the Alamo region can improve transportation and air quality by encouraging employees to drive alone less and log their commuting “smart miles” next month.  Smart miles include walking, cycling, busing, and car/vanpooling to and from work; telecommuting for meetings or other work-related activities; and eating in for lunch. Large and small organizations with the best record at the end of June will receive the Walk & Roll Commuters Challenge Cup.  Employees will start logging smart miles on June 1, 2009.

The Challenge is an annual event conducted by the Alamo Area Council of Governments (AACOG) and the San Antonio-Bexar County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) to reduce ozone pollution by traveling smarter. The Corporate Challenge runs from June 1 to June 30 and coincides with the first spike in ozone pollution concentrations – late May through June.  Agencies, businesses, schools, and other employers in the 12-county region (Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal, Frio, Gillespie, Guadalupe, Karnes, Kendall, Kerr, Medina, and Wilson) are invited to participate.

Employers may register with AACOG by contacting Brenda Williams, Projects Manager, at (210) 362-5246 or [email protected] and appoint a Project Officer.  Upon registration, employees may visit www.rcride.com to sign up for the challenge.  Participants should visit the site frequently to log their smart miles during the month.

While the Walk & Roll Challenge also promotes healthy living by encouraging active forms of transportation and saves participants gas money, the Challenge is especially focused this summer on improving air quality as part of the Big Push – a joint initiative recently launched by the Austin and San Antonio regions to benefit our air quality, environment, and economy this season.  One of the best ways your organization can participate in the Big Push is by accepting the Walk & Roll Corporate Challenge.
