Congressman Gene Green Hosts Immigration Reform Meeting
HOUSTON, TX.- Representative Gene Green today announced that he will host a Family Unity Event promoting comprehensive immigration reform from 10:30 a.m. to noon, July 11 at the Alpha Omega Church, 5621 North Freeway.
He will be joined by Representative Luis V. Gutierrez, D-Ill, chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus’ Immigration Task Force and local community organizations from the Houston region.
"Many families are torn apart because of our current immigration system," said Green. "I am grateful that Congressman Gutierrez and this coalition of local groups join me in bringing attention to the issue on behalf of the many families we hear from every year.”
Family Unity events are designed as forums for U.S. Citizens to testify to the painful realities of our broken immigration system and put a human face on the crisis. The event emphasizes that the separation of families is a damaging and hurtful policy to our communities and our nation in the absence of comprehensive immigration reform.
“Comprehensive immigration reform will not be an easy task for Congress and the President, but it is important that we keep this issue alive,” said Green. “We can no longer wait to take action – action that will help keep families in our communities together, help ensure a safe and secure nation, and contribute to our economic recovery.”
The event brings together elected officials, religious and community leaders, and U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents facing family separation due to our current immigration laws.
Families affected by the current immigration system will share their stories and petitions will be collected from the event to share with President Obama.
