Racist Minded Pastor John Hagee Endorses McCain

This past week, John McCain received the endorsement of Pastor John Hagee of Cornerstone Church.  The whacked-out evangelical Texas millionaire preacher has made repeated hateful messages.

By Mario Marcel Salas

This endorsement could help McCain shore up support amongst conservatives in the state when the general election takes place in November, but it might act like a torpedo and a wrecking ball.  Hagee’s endorsement could turn out to be a big problem for McCain given the reaction over the past week.  Catholic leaders had asked McCain to distance himself from John Hagee over anti-Catholic comments such as calling the Catholic Church, "The Great whore."  McCain made a colossal mistake in accepting an endorsement that may cost him the election given the racist and bigoted statements that the millionaire preacher has made over the years.

McCain responded to a question on the issue by saying that while he is "very proud of the Pastor John Hagee’s spiritual leadership to thousands . . . I am proud of his commitment to the independence and the freedom of the state of Israel."  McCain tried to distance himself from Hagee by saying it "does not mean that I support or endorse or agree with some of the things that Pastor John Hagee might have said or positions that he may have taken on other issues."  But what kind of spiritual leadership is this?  This type of political hogwash is sure to cost McCain millions of votes from people who are tired of the new temple priests in the form of John Hagee, and others that have prostituted themselves to extreme conservatism and the Republican Party.

Hagee’s record reveals bigoted statements on a whole range of issues.  The pastor made a ridiculous comment in an interview with NPR when he said, "All hurricanes are acts of God, because God controls the heavens.  I believe that New Orleans had a level of sin that was offensive to God, and they were recipients of the judgment of God for that.” Mr. Hagee’s loony comments and fool remarks flies in the face of the fact that the levees in New Orleans were in such poor condition that they were bound to cause a problem.  This was not “God’s doing,” but the operation of a corrupt Bush administration that refused to allocate dollars to fix the levee system

Preacher John Hagee commented in the same interview that, "Islam in general, those who live by the Koran, have a scriptural mandate to kill Christians and Jews.”  This is totally false, and Hagee has disgraced the Christian community with such bombastic racist remarks. Everyone knows that individuals can interpret religious script in any manner they choose, just like Hagee is doing. In one of the most garbage filled books ever written in history, "Jerusalem Countdown,” Pastor Hagee suggested that, "military confrontation with Iran is foretold in the Bible as a necessary precondition for the Second Coming."  John Hagee has been condemned by many Christians around the world as a heretic, and on the dark side of political lunacy in his belief that the state of Israel should get a free pass to commit killings of Palestinians as a way to get into heaven.  Many Christian observers have denounced Hagee’s call for “Christian Zionism” as blasphemous in its bogus doctrine of hate.  A few years back the African American community in San Antonio also blasted Hagee for another shenanigan, which included a fundraiser that made an appeal to "Make plans to come and go home with a slave."

McCain has been asked to repudiate the backing of John Hagee, but McCain stopped short by simply saying he didn’t agree with all of Hagee’s ideas.  Hagee may have well cost McCain the election and it may get worse if the lobbyist connection to McCain gets deeper.  McCain sent some pressuring letters to the FCC in an attempt to push that governmental body into deciding on the issue of allowing the two broadcasters to swap licenses.  The McCain letters, that have become super controversial, were sent to the FCC and came weeks before a Paxson Communications deal that was set to swap licenses with religious broadcaster Cornerstone Communications.

By asking the FCC to “just act on the matter” was clearly in the company’s interest, although the letters included repudiations stating that McCain had no position on the issue.  But by asking the FCC for swift action, McCain was able to give his big money friends a positive vote that otherwise would have caused Paxson to lose if no vote had been taken.

McCain has problems with honesty and relations with lobbyists, and now has a bigoted preacher wrapped around his neck.  Hagee has been described as the new “Jim Jones” of poison Kool-Aid fame. McCain may lose in November because of his support of the insane Iraq war, connections to lobbyists, and a racist minded preacher named John Hagee that would rather spend his time teaching and preaching hate, pushing for war, and disseminating false information
